Roll
Navigate the city using momentum-driven three-dimensional movement.
Game Jam Project · 2020
Begin as a harmless little donut and consume enough dough to become an unstoppable city-destroying catastrophe.
Project Overview
Donut Rampage is a comedic arcade destruction game created by a three-person team for Weekly Game Jam 153.
The jam’s “Roll” theme became a physics-driven donut that grows by collecting dough and crushing objects throughout a low-poly city.
Each growth stage increases the donut’s destructive power, eventually transforming a vulnerable pastry into an apocalyptic threat capable of destroying the entire environment.
The “Roll” theme became a game about physical movement, rapid growth and escalating destruction.
The player begins small enough to be threatened by pedestrians and vehicles, making early movement focused on survival and collecting dough.
As the donut grows, the relationship with the city reverses. Objects that were initially dangerous become destructible opportunities for points and further progression.
Navigate the city using momentum-driven three-dimensional movement.
Gather scattered dough and destroy suitable targets to increase in size.
Reach new stages that increase the donut’s power and available targets.
Crush cars, people and buildings to achieve the highest score before time runs out.
Seven stages transform the player from a vulnerable plain donut into a threat capable of destroying everything.
Vulnerable to people and cars.
Bounces away from cars.
Crushes people and vehicles.
Destroys smaller buildings.
Destroys medium-sized buildings.
Destroys the city’s largest buildings.
Destroys everything in its path.
My work focused on shaping the game’s progression, rolling movement and destructible city layout.
Created alongside MuFake and Machine Gun Skelly.
Donut Rampage was my first complete 3D game project after previously working primarily in two dimensions.
Moving into 3D required a new understanding of spatial level design, camera behaviour, physics and movement across three axes.
The rolling mechanic also needed to remain controllable as the donut changed size and interacted with objects of increasingly different scales.
Completing the prototype within the game-jam timeframe provided valuable experience with rapid 3D development.
Game Gallery
Gameplay footage and screenshots showing the donut’s progression from a vulnerable pastry to a city-destroying nightmare.
Donut Rampage remains one of the projects I would like to revisit as a more complete mobile game.
A future version would rebuild the movement and underlying code, improve the destruction systems and expand the progression beyond the original game-jam scope.
Additional customisation would allow players to personalise their donut while preserving the accessible arcade loop and escalating destruction.
I remain proud of what the team accomplished within the limited timeframe, particularly as my first experience creating a complete 3D project.
